Toys

Main Focus: Toys in the Past and Present - Materials

This STEM resource allows your class to direct compare the toys from the past to the toys used today. This is perfect if your Year 1 / Year 2 class are completing a topic on toys.

In this KS1 activity, we explore materials used, safety and components to give your class a solid understanding of how the toys have changed.

We have included a few questions at the bottom of each resource to see how much your class have retained from the activity. We have also added in some pictures so children can visually compare the complexity of toys now compared to the past.

Materials of toys

Toys are made from a variety of materials. Some materials have been used because they are cheaper, but others are best suited to that particular toy.

Your class will learn some information and key scientific terminology about a range of toys and their materials. They will also reflect on why these particular materials have been chosen.

Main Focus: Different Toys

In this resource, your class will recognise a range of different toys, but more importantly, they will understand that they interest in toys changes as time goes by.

Children will undoubtedly recognise that toys are different, but later in the resource we have included sections on how they are different. We explore games that are good at certain times of the year, single and multiple games, as well as thinking games.

Your class will then use their understanding and experience to create lists of toys that meet certain requirements.

E.g. Write a toy that can roll, bounce, fly, stretch etc. using STEM vocabulary.

We have also included a multiple choice version of this to help with ideas.
