Main Focus: Penny Farthing and Bicycles

Penny farthing was a type of bicycle designed by the Victorians.

It got its name from coins at that time.  It had a large front wheel and a small back wheel.  The wheels were solid, so the cyclists had a bumpy ride but no flat tyres.  The front wheel was two metres high!

Your Year 1 / Year 2 class will complete the sentences with words to show their understanding. Then will then label the different parts of a modern bicycle.

Main Focus: Hot Air Balloon

This resource focuses on the effect warming air has on the lift of a hot air balloon. Your class will learn that warmer air is lighter than cooler air and how the heat inside the balloon affects whether the balloon ascends or descends.

There are lots of different ways of travelling through the air. A hot air balloon is an interesting way. Hot air balloons use the wind for direction of travel and are difficult to steer. They go where the wind takes them!

A burner makes hot air which fills the balloon. Hot air is lighter than cold air and this makes the balloon float. When you want the hot air balloon to land, you turn down the burner and the air in the balloon will begin to cool and the balloon and basket drops to the ground.
