Weather
Partly Cloudy
This is a funny short animation about cloud creating babies of humans and animals for storks to deliver.
There is one cloud who creates the babies of all the dangerous animals and that stock has a tough job!
This is a good way to introduce to topic on weather, but is also a good opportunity to discuss how the weather changed as the cloud’s mood changed. It is useful for children to recognise the association of weather and feelings and how weather.
Thunder and Lightning – Anger, Sunshine – happiness, Rain – sadness, Darkness – fear, Brightness – loving etc.
Unlock ResourceMain Focus: Earth
Well, hello.
Welcome to our planet. We call it Earth.
It is a big sphere.
It floats in space.
Okay, we know a few things about Earth…
In this resource your class are introduced to our planet and how the temperature is warmer around the middle and closer at the poles. Your kids will then read the describing words and match them to the pictures.
Finally, your class will create frozen planets using food colouring, water balloons and water.
Main Focus: Maps
In this STEM activity, your KS1 class will be introduced to a map of the UK in a simple way.
Your class will look at some temperatures on maps in different regions. They will then write statements, fill in the temperatures or tick the correct statements from the options. E.g. Belfast is 20 degrees. etc. Yous should also point out where on the map they live and they can label it ‘Home’ drawing an arrow.
The next map your class are introduced to shows the animals in the regions. This is a bit of fun and can be done orally as well as written. E.g. There are sheep in England. Etc.
Finally, your class will create their own 3D map. We have created it with tissue paper below, but you can challenge your class to gather their own materials. Once completed they can label places they are familiar with or draw animals from the previous activity.
Unlock ResourceMain Focus: Tornadoes | Tornado in a Jar
In this resource, your class are going to learn a bit about tornadoes within the topic of weather. Your class will read the short information, answer the questions (differentiated to cater for KS1) and then create their own science experiment.
Experiment
Your class are going to create their own tornadoes in a jar. This is a simple experiment for KS1 classes that uses three different materials to see which works best. They will then record their results using their observations.
What is a tornado?
Tornadoes are powerful spinning winds which form a column. They reach from a cloud down to the ground.
Quick Facts
– Tornadoes can destroy buildings.
– Some tornadoes last only a few seconds.
– Other tornadoes can spin for an hour.
– Cooling air from clouds above stops the tornado.
Main Focus: Wind
This resource introduces your class to the weather type wind. Once they have read all the facts and information about what wind is and why it is useful, they will create their own wind vane to monitor the direction of the wind over a week and record their results.
An instructions page and template have been provided in the resource.
Wind
Wind is the natural movement of air. When the sun shines, warm air rises up to the sky and then the cool air quickly fills the space left behind. This is what creates the wind.
Main Focus: Rain
In this STEM resource aimed at Year 1 and Year 2, your class will read the information about rain and recognise the different types of rainfall. They will then compete the statements to show what they have learned and then complete a lovely art activity.
What is rain?
Rain is droplets of water that falls as drops from the sky. It is a liquid.
Rainfall
Rain fills lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. It provides the fresh water needed by humans, animals, and plants.
Quick facts
- Light rainfall is known as a drizzle.
- Showers only last a short time.
- A downpour is heavy rain.
Main Focus: Sunshine
In this resource your class will explores information about the sun and sunshine. They will touch on the following areas…
What is the Sun?
The Sun is a star. It is a huge, spinning ball of gas. The Sun gives Earth the heat is needs for life.
Sunny Days
We all love Sunny days. On clear days during the spring and summer months, we go outdoors, have BBQs, water balloon fights, eat ice cream and many more fun things.
Sun Safety
- The Sun’s rays can be harmful.
- On sunny days we should wear sun cream, hat and sunglasses.
- A long period of hot weather is called a heatwave.
Once your class have read the information, they can complete the statements to show their understanding. There are a range of art ideas at the end to complete.
Main Focus: Melting Experiment - Coloured Card
This is a science experiment that focuses on melting. Your class will observe how ice cubes melt differently depending on the colour of card. Please ensure you use black and white card as well as three others. you could also complete this experiment using different materials such as wood, metal, cotton, plastic etc. (allow kids to choose). We have included a template for this too.
Your class will circle the equipment needed, they will then sequence the instructions from 1-4 and finally record their observations from this experiment.
Unlock ResourceMain Focus: Rainbow Colours
This is a printable sheet to show the colours in a rainbow. We have included two sheets, one with colours labelled and the other is blank for your kids to recall the colours.
