Plants

Short Story: Burgeon

This is a imaginative way to start your science topic on plants. it shows a ‘Tree Seed’ character hatching into a little flower and once it finds water, it dives in a pond and grows into a huge tree.

The short film start off brilliantly for this topic, but I would stop it at 1minute 39 seconds because that’s punchy enough for introducing the topic and keeps it lighthearted and imaginative.

Create your own Plant character and show the stages of evolution into a tree. Design a seed, design a small flower, design a tree.

Main Focus: Parts of a Plant

This resource aimed at Year 3 and Year 4 classes explores the different parts of the plant and the roles of each.

Your Ks2 class will label the diagram of the plant and complete the sentences explaining the function of each part.

Main Focus: Learning about the Roots

This is a lovely science resource that encourages your class to complete the sentences by adding in words from a word bank.

This KS2 science activity explores different parts of the plant and focuses on the roots with a simple experiment using spring onions.

Main Focus: Photosynthesis

This experiment will help your Year 3 / Year 4 class to find out how light affects growing plants. It will also introduce them to key vocabulary and terminology linked to photosynthesis.

What do plants eat?

Plants make their own food in their leaves using water, sunlight and carbon dioxide. This process is called photosynthesis. It occurs in leaves using a green pigment chemical called chlorophyll. This chemical produces food for the plant. Oxygen is a waste product of photosynthesis. Photosynthesis can take place slowly or quickly depending on the temperature of the air and amount of sunlight. Photosynthesis takes place more quickly when it is warm!

Main Focus: Plants and Seeds

This science activity is linked to plants and their seeds and is a useful knowledge building activity for Year 3 and Year 4 classes.

Plants can be identified by their seeds. Your class will match the pictures of the plants to their seeds and write the name of the plant.

Main Focus: Seeds Comprehension

This is a great comprehension resource that explores the seeds of plants in more depth.

Your class will read all the information about seeds and answer the questions based on what they have read.

We have differentiated this resource and have also included a multiple choice activity sheet.

Main Focus: Plant Lifecycle - Sequencing

This resource is linked to the life cycle of a plant. Your Ks2 class will read the statements, cut them out and place them into order.

This resource covers, fertilisation, seed production, dispersal and more. It also includes keys parts of the plants and terminology to develop and deepen the understanding of your class in the plant lifecycle.

Main Focus: Edible Plants

This is a science resource aimed at children aged 7-9.

We often eat the fruit of plants, but the leaves, roots, stalks and flowers of many plants are also suitable for humans to eat.

You will need to provide your class with some plants that are edible. Your class will

  • Look at each plant and decide which part of the plant you can eat.
  • Write the part of the plant that you can eat
  • Draw a sketch of the pant.

Main Focus: Stems and Transportation

Like all living things, plants need water to survive. Nutrients in the soil are dissolved in water and used by the plant to stay healthy. If a plant does not have enough water, it becomes weak and cannot support its own weight. It will begin to wilt and will die. Water enters the plant through the roots and is sucked up by the stem. Thin tubes in the stem take the water to other parts of the plant such as the leaves and flowers.

Your class will read the passage, insert the missing words, sequence the stages of transportation and draw a diagram to show transportation in a plant.
