Water

Main Focus: KWL Grids

This is a useful starting point for your topic on water to gauge where your children are in terms of understanding of the topic water.

We have also included a blank grid incase anything else pops up during the topic.

Main Focus: Evaporation Experiment

Water evaporates quite easily and is naturally found in the air in tiny particles.  This is why you may feel the air damp after it has been raining, or on a warm day if you are near a body of water or lots of plants.

This KS2 Science experiment linked to evaporation will allow your class to observe the change in water levels due to the evaporation of water.

Main Focus: Purifying Water Experiment

Clean water using evaporation and condensation science experiment for aged 9-11, Year 5 / Year 6, KS2 classes.

Evaporation and condensation play important roles in the water cycle, ensuring that we have clean water.

In this experiment, your class will collect clean water from a soiled water sample using the process of evaporation and condensation.

IMPORTANT This process does not produce clean drinking water.

You will need:

  • a large bowl
  • a smaller bowl or cup that can sit in the larger bowl
  • dirty water (made from water and food colouring)
  • plastic wrap such as clingfilm
  • a weight such as a stone

Main Focus: Water Vocabulary and Definitions

In this activity, your class will look at the key terminology and vocabulary linked to water.

Main Focus: States of Water

Water can be found in different states. Water can be a liquid, solid or gas.

Your class will look at the key vocabulary associated with this activity and explain the science behind it.

it is important that your class not only recognise the states of water but can explain it using key science terminology.

The Science

The warm water evaporates.  When it evaporates it becomes a vapour.  As it rises, it meets cooler air near the top of the glass jar and begins to condense.  Condensation causes water droplets to form.

Main Focus: Evaporating Sanitiser

Evaporation occurs when a liquid changes into a gas or vapour and appears to vanish into the air. Some liquids evaporate more easily than others. Many hand sanitisers use alcohol to kill germs (bacteria and viruses). As you rub the gel on your hands you will notice that it begins to evaporate.

You can also test this experiment with different sanitisers to see if there is a difference, paying particular attention to the alcohol content in each.

Main Focus: Clues and Wordsearch

In this activity, your class can either find all the water-related topic words in the word search or they can read the clues, determine what the words are, and then find them in the word search.

E.g. The chemical symbol for this is H20.

Main Focus: Condensation Experiment

This experiment will provide you with the opportunity to observe the change that occurs when water that is in the form of a gas or vapour turns into liquid.

You will need:

  • Three ice cubes.
  • Water – cold water, lukewarm water and warm water.
  • Three glasses.

Instructions:

  • Fill the first glass with cool water and add three ice cubes.
  • Fill the second glass with lukewarm water.
  • Fill the third glass with warm water.
  • Wait for 5 -10 minutes and observe the changes on each glass.

Your class will draw and record what happened to each glass.

Main Focus: Water Usage

This STEM resource for KS2 encourages your class to record and reflect on their water usage at home as well as giving them facts and figures about how much water is actually used during certain activities.

It is important to preserve our clean water. To help us understand how we use water in our home, your class will record how much water is used per activity by their household over three days.

Main Focus: Quiz

This is a good end-of-topic activity for your class to showcase what they now know and how their knowledge and understanding has progressed in the topic of water.

Key concepts and aspects will be explored and your class will complete the sentences to the best of their ability.
